Polycarbonate is one of the longest-lasting materials for outdoor lighting globes because it's highly impact-resistant, UV-stabilized, and won't shatter like glass. Acrylic offers excellent clarity but is more prone to cracking over time, while glass provides a premium look but can break more easily in harsh outdoor conditions.

In this guide, we’ll break down everything you need to know — including features, benefits, installation tips, and why a UL-Listed photocell sensor is a smart investment for long-term outdoor lighting performance.
Sea turtle friendly lights are outdoor fixtures that meet Florida's official three-part standard: they use long-wavelength amber, orange, or red LEDs above 560nm (not filtered white light), are fully shielded so no light is visible from the beach, and run at the lowest intensity needed for the job. They're required by law on Florida's coastline during nesting season (March 1 to October 31) and are certified through programs like FWC Wildlife Lighting Certification or DarkSky International.
Solar bollard lights are a good choice because they're wire-free and self-contained, no trenching or electrician needed, since the solar panel, LED, and battery are all built into one fixture. They keep working during power outages, run on clean energy with zero electricity cost, and hold a charge for up to 23 hours even on cloudy days. On top of that, they're durable and low maintenance, built to handle harsh weather and vandalism, which makes them a practical upgrade for pathways, commercial properties, and coastal or waterfront settings.
The right thickness depends on four things: how much unsupported span the sheet needs to cover, how much impact it needs to withstand, whether it's indoor or outdoor, and how much weight or load it needs to support. As a starting point, 1/8 inch is the most common thickness and works for most indoor signage, light diffusers, and small displays, but larger spans, outdoor use, or high-impact areas call for going thicker or switching to polycarbonate.

For thin sheets under 3mm, score both sides with a utility knife and straight edge, then snap along the line. For 1/8 inch and thicker, use a circular saw with a fine-toothed carbide blade (60-80 teeth) at 3,500-4,000 RPM, feeding slowly to avoid melting the edge. Always leave the protective film on while cutting, clamp the sheet firmly, and support the offcut side so it doesn't crack near the end of the cut.
