What do the Center Basket Retaining clips do?
Although they're often called retaining clips, the manufacturer refers to them as light traps because they perform two important jobs:

Hold the diffuser securely in place. The clip attaches to the fixture housing and supports the acrylic diffuser or louver so it doesn't sag or fall out during normal use.

Block light from leaking around the edges. The clip creates a tight fit between the diffuser and the fixture, preventing light from escaping through the gaps. This gives the fixture a cleaner appearance and directs light where it's intended.
Think of these clips as the brackets that hold your light cover in place. If one breaks, the diffuser may sag, rattle, or fall out of the fixture. Replacing the clip restores a secure fit and keeps the diffuser properly aligned.
